Three scientists each win $10,000 for organizing international conferences in Montréal

The Fonds de recherche du Québec (FRQ) and the Palais des congrès de Montréal are delighted to announce the winners of competition Soutien à l’organisation de congrès internationaux du Club des Ambassadeurs et Ambassadrices du Palais des congrès de Montréal et du Fonds de recherche du Québec (FRQ).

At the heart of this joint initiative: the desire to highlight the role of the scientific community in holding international conferences that contribute to enhancing Québec research. Three $10,000 prizes are awarded each year to pay tribute to the commitment of Québec researchers who actively contribute to attracting and organizing major international scientific gatherings to the Palais des congrès de Montréal

These funds seek to support the holding of major events that will generate significant intellectual and economic spinoffs for Québec. This year, the three prizes were awarded to:

  • Roxane Maranger from Université de Montréal
ASLO-SIL 2026 (joint conference of the Association for the Sciences of Limnology and Oceanography and the International Society of Limnology)
    Aquatic Confluence: Science, People, Knowledge
    From May 12 to 16, 2026
  • Isabelle Héroux from Université du Québec à Montréal
37th World Conference of the International Society for Music Education (ISME)
Unity in Music Education: Building Bridges for All
    From July 27 to 31, 2026
  • Sanda Koboevic from Polytechnique Montréal
19th World Conference on Earthquake Engineering (WCEE 2028)
Collaborate, Learn, Innovate and Implement: Building a Safer and More Resilient World Together

A testament to the crucial role played by our scientific community, these events place Québec at the centre of global conversations while creating significant collective wealth.

Quotes

On behalf of the FRQ, I wish to congratulate the recipients and to hail their devotion. Organizing international conferences is no small feat. Yet, these networking activities that bring scientific communities together from around the world are vital in promoting local and international collaborations that advance knowledge. As underscored by the themes of the conferences organized by the winners, these gatherings are also extraordinary opportunities to build ties between the experts, practitioners and citizens who bring new ideas or approaches to the table that can shape the future of society, be it in music education, aquatic habitats or earthquake prevention.

– Rémi Quirion, Chief Scientist of Québec

When our researchers work to attract major international scientific conferences to Montréal, it’s all Québec knowledge that shines, to the benefit of society as a whole. These events are veritable springboards for research and innovation. Our role at the Palais des congrès is to support our scientists to the best of our ability with an eye to amplifying the economic, intellectual and societal spinoffs that these major meetings generate for our city and for Québec.
