There are struggles that transcend cultures, borders and ideologies, including the one waged by Dr. Denis Mukwege. The humanist doctor has devoted his life to helping women and children victims of sexual violence in the context of armed conflict, in particular in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.
His fight to protect thousands of women victims of unimaginable violence and restore their hope inspires respect and admiration. More than simply a medical mission, the 2018 Nobel Peace Prize winner’s tireless struggle for justice and human dignity is a bulwark against barbarism.
During the 5th Congress of the Mukwege International Chair, held from December 3 to 6, 2024 at the Palais des congrès de Montréal, our team had the privilege to gather this doctor’s exceptional reflections. In this gripping interview, Dr. Mukwege talks about his extraordinary career and shares the lessons he has learned over the years in a struggle that has mobilized a large international following. His message is one of resilience and hope.
Founded in 2018, the Mukwege International Chair seeks to develop interdisciplinary research in the area of sexual violence against women by bringing together the knowledge and expertise of various partners and universities around the world. In Québec, the Chair enjoys the participation of Université de Montréal (UdeM) and Marie Hatem, full professor at the École de Santé Publique of UdeM. Professor Hatem works for the well-being of women, their empowerment, the recognition of health care as an essential human right, gender equality and the reduction and monitoring of violence against women.
On November 28, Professor Hatem was awarded a $10,000 bursary in the Support for the Organization of International Conventions competition, organized by the Palais des congrès de Montréal’s Ambassador Club and the Fonds de recherche du Québec. This recognition highlights the key role Professor Hatem played in organizing the 5th Congress of the Mukwege International Chair in Montréal.
